“Winter Trails” Program Works Wonders

Put on by SnowSports Industries America, a program called Winter Trails is getting kids and families on snow shoes and cross country skis across the nation. The program held its first highly successful event Saturday, January 8, with family-friendly weather in almost every part of the country. “The early attendance numbers are very strong,” says Winter Trails Administrator Reese Brown, adding that attendance numbers so far this year are about 10 percent higher than last year’s. “This is very exciting to see, and we hope this trend continues as the rest of the numbers come in.”

Participants at this year’s event were treated to a great introduction of snowshoeing and cross country skiing at over 80 event sites nationwide. “Mt. Hood was beautiful! We are hooked!” stated a participant on Facebook of an Oregon event.

Winter Trails offers children and adults, new to snow sports, a chance to try snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing free at venues throughout North America. There is no charge for the use of equipment or trails. Most locations offer snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Some locations only offer snowshoeing.

There are still five more Winter Trails events that have not occurred yet. They are:
1/15 Winter Family Fun Day on Reflections Lake, AK
1/15 Estes Park, CO
1/15 East Mink Creek Nordic Center, ID
1/15 Ellicott Creek Park, NY
3/5 Canterbury Farm Cross Country Ski Center, MA

Winter Trails locations, hours and offerings are posted at WinterTrails.org as they are announced. Venues include alpine resorts, Nordic centers, state parks, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service land. Details accompany each event’s listing on the Winter Trails website. Registration is also available on-site at each location.

SnowSports Industries America (SIA), a national, non-profit trade association representing suppliers of consumer snow sports with constituents in the retailer, rep and resort communities, manages Winter Trails. Winter Trails sponsors and media partners included: Atlas, Backpacker Magazine, Crescent Moon Snowshoes, Cross Country Skier Magazine, MSR, Rossignol, SkiTrax, Snowshoe Magazine, Tubbs, Whitewoods, XCSkiresorts.com.
